On April 14, the Ontario government extended the Declaration of Emergency under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (the “Act”) for a further 28 days. The Declaration of Emergency will now be in effect until May 12, 2020. The Declaration of Emergency was passed during a special sitting of the Ontario legislature.

As a result of the extension of the Declaration of Emergency, Ontario can continue to enforce emergency orders under the Act, including the closure of all non-essential workplaces, outdoor amenities, and restrictions on social gatherings of more than five people. Accordingly, employers, whether operating an essential or non-essential workplace, should plan to continue to operate in accordance with the various emergency orders until at least May 12.

We will continue to provide you with developments on the Declaration of Emergency in Ontario, and any further emergency orders and regulations that impact employers.
