On June 7, 2018 the Senate passed Federal Bill C-45, the Cannabis Act (the “Act”) in a final vote, with a number of amendments. The Act will legalize the use, production, distribution, and sale of cannabis for non-medicinal purposes by amending the Criminal Code, the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and other legislation. The House is currently considering the Senate’s amendments to the Act, and will vote on an amended version of the Act, incorporating some but not all of the Senate’s amendments, imminently before referring it back to the Senate. The key provisions of the Act will come into force on a day fixed by the Governor in Council. It remains to be seen when the Act will be finalized and passed before coming into force.
